I'm having mixed feelings about Joss Whedon's new show, Dollhouse, premiering on Fox on Friday, February 13.
I am thrilled that Joss, the maker of my beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its spin-off Angel and the space-cowboy adventure Firefly, is returning to television, a medium and a network that doesn't deserve him but is smart to get him back.
Eliza Dushku, who played Faith on Buffy and Angel, was never one of my faves. She was so edgy and harsh. And that chip on her shoulder got really old after about two seconds. Will she be different here? Can Joss make her stop making that furrowed eyebrow look? After watching a few clips of the show's pilot, I have hope.
I'm giddy that one of the major television networks is giving scripted television a chance. Hello, NBC? Take note.
I'm afraid viewers won't get it and I'll be one of those viewers. The premise of the sci-fi show is this: Echo (Dushku) is an Active, a woman whose memory has been erased who is employed by people who reprogram her to be whatever their wealthy/shady customers want: a lover, an assassin, a BFF. By Joss' own admission, the show is hard to sum up, which makes me fear that the viewers who do tune in won't give it time. Enter flashbacks to Firefly and many other non-Whedon shows I've loved in the past.
The twist to Dollhouse, which to the untrained eye is going to look like a show about hotties with guns, is that at some point Echo starts to remember parts of her past, which is going to cause all kinds of emotional conflict and drama.
OK, no more doubts--I'm so ready to give it a chance and jump headfirst into the Whedonverse again!

Joss is back!
The script is almost verbatim from The Most Dangerous Game, a chapter from Cathy O'Brien's autobiography, TRANCE Formation of America, referring to Dick Cheney hunting naked girls with guns in the forest, then raping them - or killing them - as part of the brainwashing of CIA sexslaves and assassins in MKULTRA, with judges in Knoxville saying that is legal "for reasons of National Security".
