10-Minute Obsession:

Sony's PS3 network intrusion "response" draws Senatorial ire

If you own a Playstation 3 and tool around online at all, I really hope you've been paying attention to this and at least considering taking the appropriate measures.

But that's not what this entry's about, since you're already on top of the whole "PSN outage turned finale from Burning Chrome" thing, right?  PSN has been down for a week now - old news in internet terms - and the slow dread of stolen accountholder information has been looming since day one.  Sony's long-anticipated (and much-maligned for taking its sweet-ass time) response only sealed the fate many users already expected.

What is new, however, is Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal's scathing response to Sony's weeklong lack of transparency regarding said information breach.  Sez the Senator:

I am concerned that PlayStation Network users' personal and financial information may have been inappropriately accessed by a third party. Compounding this concern is the troubling lack of notification from Sony about the nature of the data breach. Although the breach occurred nearly a week ago, Sony has not notified customers of the intrusion, or provided information that is vital to allowing individuals to protect themselves from identity theft, such as informing users whether their personal or financial information may have been compromised.  Nor has Sony specified how it intends to protect these consumers.

Do we have any readers from Connecticut?  I'm curious what it's like to live in a state in which your Congressional representation can be reasonably expected to understand 21st-century issues like these.

At least it's not an issue coming before our state Senate.  Campfield would probably misread Sony's similarly-affected Qriocity streaming music system's name and try to ban it from being mentioned in schools.
