WUTK is hosting an Earth Day benefit show headlined by the Black Cadillacs at Barley's on Friday, April 9. There's a $5 cover (you can always donate a little more) and proceeds will be split between EarthFest 2010 and WUTK.

Joey English and Nashville's AutoVaughn will open the show. Doors at 9 p.m.

WUTK 90.3 FM is airing an interview with James Brown, recorded backstage either before or after his 1968 concert at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum, on Sunday morning. No word on where the footage came from or why it's being broadcast now, but any reason to listen to the Godfather of Soul is a good one.

The broadcast starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, with an NPR program featuring Ry Cooder and the Chieftans.
The guys at WUTK's Funhouse like loud guitars. Nick Raskulinecz produces records with loud guitars. So it's fitting that Raskulinecz, a Knoxville native (and ex-Hypertribe bassist) who's produced records by Funhouse-approved bands like Foo Fighters, Rush, Shadows Fall, and Superdrag, will call into the show tonight sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Listen at 90.3 FM.

Raskulinecz's latest credit is the Alice in Chains' comeback record Black Gives Way to Blue, which Funhouse co-host Rob Levering says is "freaking awesome."
The Square Room has just announced Sound Off, a music tournament-style competition for area bands and solo artists that starts in September and runs once a month for five months, concluding with a final showdown in March.

The grand prize includes studio time at Rock Snob Studios, packaging and pressing of a CD EP, guaranteed radio airplay on WUTK 90.3 FM, and a headlining show at the Square Room.

Judges will select 25 contestants from all the entries, and those acts will be grouped in sets of five for each monthly performance. The rules says: "The 25 semi-finalists and 5 finalists will be judged on a variety of criteria. Crowd reaction will account for 30% of the scoring and 'celebrity judges' will score the remaining 70% of each band/musician's performance on various levels of skill such as songwriting, cover song, stage presence."

Bobby Bare Jr. and his Young Criminals Starvation League and a whole bunch of locals--Mic Harrison and the High Score, Todd Steed and the Suns of Phere--along with 20-year-old YouTube ukulele phenomenon Julia Nunes are performing tonight at Barley's Taproom as a benefit for WUTK 90.3 FM (the University of Tennessee's student-run radio station, which depends entirely on donations) and tomorrow's EarthFest celebration.

WUTK general manager and program director Benny Smith talks about the music he's been listening to lately here.

Show starts at 9 p.m., admission is $5.
