Classical Cafe:

A Merry Prank?

At the conclusion of Richard Strauss' tone poem Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks (performed by the KSO last week), the composer leaves the listener with the musical impression that although Till ostensibly dies, his whimsical spirit lives on to prank another day.  Apparently, he did just that.

The title of another work on that program, Rainbow Body by contemporary American composer Christopher Theofanidis, refers to a concept in Tibetan Buddhism where enlightened beings are absorbed back into the universe as light and energy when they die.  And, under the Wikipedia article on Rainbow Body, a "contributor" has added the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to a list of "Those who have realised the rainbow body according to tradition."  Somehow, I seriously doubt that there will be evidence forthcoming to support that contention.
