"An Age of Elegance" Comes Next Sunday

Music of the Ages, this season's University of Tennessee faculty chamber music series, opens this month with "An Age of Elegance" with works by Mozart, Bach, and Ewald. The concert, on Sunday, September 13th in the Cox Auditorium on the UT Campus, will begin at 4:00pm. And...like most UT School of Music events, it is free.

The concert will open with the Piano No. 1 in G Minor, K. 478, by Mozart. The ensemble will consist of School of Music faculty members Mark Zelmanovich, violin; Hillary Herndon, viola; Wesley Baldwin, cello; and David Northington, piano.

Two arias from Bach cantatas will follow the Mozart.  "Wir eilen" from Cantata 78 (Jesu, der du meine Seele) and "Entziehe dich, eilands, meine Herze" from Cantata 124 (Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht).  Performing will be soprano Cecily Nall and mezzo-soprano Lorraine diSimone, accompanied by Mr. Baldwin on cello and Patrick Harvey, keyboard.

The concert will conclude with a 1912 work by a Russian composer, Victor Ewald, known mostly for his five brass quintets.  The Brasswind Quintet will perform the Quintet No. 3 in D-flat Major, Op. 7. The Brasswind Quintet features Cathy Leach and T. J. Perry, trumpets; Calvin Smith, horn; Daniel Cloutier, trombone; and Sande McMorran, tuba.
