Classical Cafe:

Boo, Hiss, Boo!

What do they think this is, a joint session of Congress?

Wild booing greeted Luc Bondy, the stage director of the new production of Puccini's Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera's opening in September.  Plenty of critics, too, were quite negative in their reviews of the production that replaced the enduring one by Franco Zeffirelli.  Alex Ross of The New Yorker found it to be a fiasco.

Verdi's Aida returned to the Met stage on October 2nd. After substantial applause was heard for the singers, the conductor, Daniele Gatti, was soundly booed.

And, if that's not enough, the production creators of a new Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Opera House in London were greeted with what The Guardian called a "wall of aggressive sound."

Is this display of audience disapproval a trend, perhaps?  Or, maybe, an unwillingness to accept change.  Stay tuned.
