Miscellany: Weekend Events

The notices for classical music events for the weekend really piled up here at the Café, so I'll try to sort them out a bit. Many of them have previous blog posts, so click on the index and scroll through for more details.

SATURDAY, March 20

• A Faculty Recital with Visiting Guest Artists: Edward Phillips, trumpet; Jessica McCormack, soprano; and Amanda Johnston, piano (UT Music Hall, 6 pm)

• A Graduate Recital for Sarah Hoeppner, soprano, assisted by Patrick Harvey, piano (Performance Hall 32, Alumni Mem Bldg, 8 pm)

• The Oak Ridge Symphony's concert, Strings Awaken Spring, takes place this Saturday, March 20, at 8 p.m. at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

SUNDAY, March 21

The Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series presents Di Wu in the third of three recitals this season. At Central Baptist of Bearden, 6300 Deane Hill Drive (Kingston Pike), 2:30 pm (See the calendar spotlight in this week's METRO PULSE)

The University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra presents Concertos and Classics, its annual concert featuring the winners of the School of Music Concerto Competition. Maestro James Fellenbaum will open the program with Beethoven's Egmont Overture. Following the overture, the winners of the Concerto Competition will be featured in a performance of their entry work. The concert is in the Cox Auditorium on the UT Campus at 4:00 pm

The winning performers will be:
• Countertenor Lyndon England in an aria from Handel's Giulio Cesare
• Violinist Tiago Ellwanger will perform the 1st Movement of the Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2
• Flutist Micah Layne will play Howard Hanson's Serenade
• Oboist Bonnie Farr and Violinist Rachel Grubb will perform two movements from J.S. Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, BWV 1060
• Pianist Lin Tian will perform the 1st Movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto

 

• Organist David Higgs of the Eastman School of Music will give a recital at Church of the Ascension, 800 Northshore Drive (between Kingston Pike and Lyons View), at 5:00 pm

MONDAY, March 22

A Faculty and Guest Artist Recital featuring Miroslav Hristov, violin; Chih-Long Hu, piano; and Nathan Jasinski, cello. The UT Music Hall at 8 pm
