Jennifer Higdon Wins Pulitzer

Composer Jennifer Higdon, a former Blount County resident and 1981 graduate of Heritage High  School, has won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her work Violin Concerto, which premiered in February of 2009 in Indianapolis. This work was commissioned by the Indianapolis Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Earlier this year, Higdon received a Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition for Percussion Concerto.  That recording features Colin Currie as percussionist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop.

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performed her Fanfare Ritmico in September, 2008.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, she now holds the Rock Chair in Composition at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
