Better late than never--The University of Tennessee School of Music has chosen Gregory Tardy as their new faculty member in jazz saxophone.

Tardy began his music career studying classical clarinet, but the saxophone began to dominate his attention and interest. Over the years, he has performed with a diverse group of prominent artists including Tom Harrell, Dave Douglas, Wynton Marsalis, Jay McShann, Steve Coleman, Betty Carter, James Moody, Bill Frisell, Rashied Ali, and John Patitucci. Tardy also performed with other notable saxophonists including Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Dewey Redman, and Ravi Coltrane. In recent years, Tardy has played clarinet on recordings by Tom Harrell, Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow, Stefan Harris, and Andrew Hill.
In 1998, he released on CD Serendipity which helped earn him a nomination as "Best Debut Artist" for the New York Jazz Awards. He has also toured Europe on the Rising Stars Tour. His other albums include The Hidden Light (2000), Abundance (2001), The Truth, Steps of Faith, and He Knows My Name (2005).
Tardy is, indeed, a welcome addition to the excellent UT School of Music Jazz program.
