Schreker's "The Stigmatized" on WUOT on Saturday

LA OPERA ON-AIR, broadcast by WUOT-FM in the Knoxville area, will offer on this Saturday's broadcast the US premiere of Franz Schreker's The Stigmatized (Die Gezeichneten). The broadcast time is 1 pm.

Schreker was born in Monaco in 1878 the son of Ignaz Schrecker, a court photographer and Jewish by birth, and Eleonore von Clossmann, a member of the Catholic aristocracy of eastern Styria. The outbreak of World War I interrupted his work on Die Gezeichneten, but it was eventually premiered to great acclaim in April, 1918, in Frankfurt am Main.

From the LA OPERA ON-AIR synopsis:

"In this production, tenor Robert Brubaker stars as Alviano, a deformed nobleman who has created an idyllic island as an escape from his tortured existence. A beautiful painter, Carlotta (soprano Anja Kampe), mistakes her pity for Alviano for love. She then turns to a handsome rival, Tamare (baritone Martin Gantner), with disastrous results. The conductor is James Conlon."

This production is part of LA Opera's Recovered Voices project, an exploration of masterpieces by the lost generation of composers affected by the Holocaust. In Schreker's case, the rise of the Nazi Party brought an end to performances of his works and led, though indirectly, to his death in 1934 in Berlin.
