With the departure of UT Opera Theatre Director Carroll Freeman to a similar position at Georgia State University, the question has been this summer: who will be chosen as a replacement? Freeman had been with the School of Music since 1996 and had had remarkable success in making the opera program at UT a notable one with many singers going on to big careers.

The question of his replacement has been answered. It is Michael McConnell, who will take the position of Interim Director of Opera. McConnell is both a stage director and an educator. Included on his list of directorial projects was the 2004 Knoxville Opera production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. His experience as an educator is broad as well, including the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music (CCM), Baldwin-Wallace College's Conservatory of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and an Associate Professorship of Opera at Florida State University from 1995 to 2002.
The UT Opera Theatre schedule for 2010-11 is Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore this fall and Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring in the spring of 2011.
