Peter Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Concerto in D Major for Violin and Orchestra is one of those works that I always seem to think I have heard more often than I have. Seeing it listed on the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's schedule for September, I immediately thought: "Didn't I just hear that somewhere?" Checking my notes, though, the answer was no, at least not with the KSO. Frankly, I really can't account for this feeling of over-familiarization, but I am looking forward to this performance for several reasons--at the top of the list is the violinist the KSO has lined up.
The KSO is opening its 2010-2011 season next week with an all-Tchaikovsky concert featuring Dylana Jenson as violin soloist in the concerto. Ms. Jenson, who was a notable child prodigy from a family with a strong arts tradition, was performing with major orchestras by age 13. She must have had an interesting childhood--her siblings have equal levels of talent. Her sister, Vicky Jenson, directed the films Shrek and Shark Tale. Her brother is a painter and a poet. And her daughter, Mariama Lockington, is a Hopwood award winning poet.
Also on the All-Tchaikovsky program will be the Coronation March, Capriccio Italien, and the 1812 Overture (Festival Overture, The Year 1812, Op. 49). Now, I'm really sure I heard that one somewhere recently...
Lucas Richman will conduct.
The concerts are Thursday, September 23 and Friday, September 24 in the Tennessee Theatre. Note that the EARLIER starting time for these opening concerts is 7:00 pm.
