Classical Cafe:

Isotone Concert Series in Oak Ridge Sept. 19

They call it "a collision of physics and music." Okay, you've got my interest.

The Isotone Concert Series, now in its third season, is a series of performances co-sponsored by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, the organization behind the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, and the American Museum of Science and Energy. Isotone refers to a single musical tone AND it also refers to nuclides that have the same number of neutrons but a different number of protons.

The series, founded by Scott and Susan Eddlemon, opens on September 19 with a tribute to Glenn Seaborg, the discoverer of 10 transuranium elements, winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the former chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The concert will be a percussion extravaganza featuring composer-percussionist Jay Oberfeitinger with Scott Eddlemon. Flautist Rachel Schlafer-Parton will join Eddlemon in performing Ingolf Dahl's Duettino Concertante for flute and percussion.

This first concert will be on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, 3 p.m., at the American Museum of Science and Energy, 300 S. Tulane Ave., in Oak Ridge.

Tickets are $17.50. A subscription to the two concerts (the second concert will be on January 30) is $25, and can be obtained by calling the ORCMA office at 865-483-5569.
