Van Cliburn Winner Nakamatsu at Clayton Center

Prior to June, 1997, Jon Nakamatsu held the position of a high school German teacher. Although he had studied piano since the age of six, Nakamatsu had neither majored in music, nor entered a music conservatory. However, that didn't really prove to be an impediment to the young pianist.

With a performance of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto, the judges of the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition saw and heard something extraordinary in Nakamatsu and granted him the Gold Medal Award. Since then, Nakamatsu has appeared as soloist with orchestras around the U.S. and around the globe.

Nakamatsu will be making a solo recital appearance at the Clayton Center for the Arts in the Lambert Recital Hall in Maryville on Thursday, October 28th at 7:30 pm. His expected program is:

CLEMENTI: Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Opus 25 No. 5
SCHUMANN: Papillons, Opus 2
BEETHOVEN: Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Opus 27 No. 2 ("Moonlight")
LISZT: Three Sonetti del Petrarca (Années de pelèrinage II, Italie)
CHOPIN: Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante, Opus 22
