Perhaps you've travelled somewhere away from Knoxville, flipped on a television in a hotel room or a host's living room, and found one of the most satisfying and enjoyable time-killers imaginable--Classic Arts Showcase. But...you can't do it in Knoxville.
In brief, Classic Arts Showcase (CAS) is a program of MTV-like clips of classical music, opera, and dance performances--some new, some old--that is provided free of charge via satellite to educational television channels, PBS, basic cable tiers, and non-commercial broadcasters. For that reason, there is almost no rhyme or reason as to where it might show up in a specific area. Someone in one of those broadcast areas must take the time to program it. And since there is no revenue to gained from it, there is no specific motivation to air it--except for the sheer entertainment value it provides to the public.
How can something like that even exist? CAS is completely funded by the Lloyd E. Rigler - Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation, a major arts supporter for over 25 years, which has created CAS to inspire viewers to go out and see live performances in their own communities.
Although I understand CAS was once available in Knoxville through the community service channels on the local cable operators, it no longer is. However, once you've killed an hour or so watching clip after clip of vintage performances, you'll say--as I do--I want my CAS!
If anyone has information about CAS being aired on a publicly available channel in Knoxville, please leave a comment.
