Monday Miscellany on Tuesday

•  The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for the Middle/East Tennessee District were held last Saturday at the James R. Cox Auditorium on the UT Campus. Winners were bass-baritone John Arnold (formerly of UT Opera Theatre); bass Joseph Beutel of Bloomington, IN; baritone Thomas Florio of Bloomington, IN; soprano Lacy Sauter of Bloomington, IN; and Amanda Woodbury of Crestwood, KY. The winners will compete in the Mid-South Regional competition in Memphis on February 5.

•  Cellist and UT SOM faculty member Wesley Baldwin will give a faculty solo recital on Friday, January 14 at 6:00 pm in Performance Hall 32 of the Alumni Memorial Building on the UT campus. The recital will feature works by Bach, Britten, Shulman, and Piatti.

•  Later that evening, soprano Corinne Stevens will give a graduate recital in the same hall--Performance Hall 32 at 8:00 pm. (Alumni Memorial Building)

•  The American Spiritual Ensemble makes a tour stop at the Clayton Center for the Arts on the Maryville College Campus on Saturday, January 15 at 8 pm. See the calendar spotlight in this week's Metro Pulse for information or try their website.  

•  The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra offers the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert on Sunday, January 16, 6 pm, at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. James Fellenbaum conducts. This concert is FREE.

•  My review of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra concert "Start the New Year with Music" from last Saturday evening will appear in this week's issue of Metro Pulse.
