Orchestras go through inevitable changes just like every organization. Here are a few changes within the ranks of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
• Gabriel Lefkowitz has taken over as the KSO's new Concertmaster. (My review of his first official concert)
• Associate Concertmaster Miroslav Hristov has stepped down from the orchestra to concentrate on his violin professorship at the University of Tennessee School of Music.
• Principal Clarinetist Gary Sperl is taking a one-year sabbatical from his KSO duties and from his faculty clarinet position at UT to teach in Tanzania. Auditions for his interim replacement were held last month and were won by Peter Cain.
• Principal Bassoon Ellen Connors has been named Principal Bassoon with the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra in Columbus, OH. Apparently, the schedules of the two orchestras will not conflict--much.
• KSO blogger Andy Bryenton reports that core violinist Lee Sheehan has stepped down and will be studying with violinist Alex Kerr at Indiana University. UT Symphony Orchestra concertgoers may remember Kerr from his appearance in Knoxville several years ago performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with that orchestra. Kerr was the former concertmaster with Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra.
• As has been sadly reported, KSO Principal Horn Calvin Smith passed away on May 8.
