Let's be honest...downtown Knoxville is not so huge that a healthy person can't walk briskly from one end to the other in 15-20 minutes. But, admittedly, there are times when you just don't feel like walking another step. That's why KAT's recently re-designed routes seem like such a good idea at last.
The previous routes seemed to have little to do with how people move about downtown, so the re-design appears to be quite appropriate. There are now three routes:
1) Gay Street Line - The "purple" line runs up and down Gay Street, end to end, with the southern end looping around the Marriott. The northern end extends to Fifth Avenue.
2) The Downtown Loop - the "red" line loops around the Police HQ on the east, stops at the KAT Knoxville Station, runs north down Gay Street to Summit Hill, turns South on Henley, and returns to KAT Station via Main and Church.
3) The UT Line - the "gold" (OK, it's orange) line has stops at the KAT Station, then heads to UT via Clinch. After an abundance of stops along Cumberland as far as 17th Street, the trolley returns to downtown via Cumberland, Clinch, and Church.
Frequency will be the key to success here--hopefully wait times, for whatever reason, won't exceed the walking time. On the other hand, it is FREE. Comments on how the trolleys are working?
