Classical Cafe:

FOMA to Open with Author Anne Lamott

FOMA, or Friends of Music and the Arts, has announced their 2012-13 season (their fourteenth) opening on September 19. The organization is a group of music and art benefactors and lovers that is part of Church of the Ascension (Episcopal) in Knoxville. FOMA has filled an important, if not essential, niche in the Knoxville cultural scene as one of the few organizations that books and organizes events that otherwise would not be available to local audiences.

The season opens on Wednesday, September 19, 7:30 p.m., with "An Evening with Author Anne Lamott" -- the author of Bird by Bird, Operating Instructions, and Traveling Mercies. Tickets are $20.

Of particular interest to music lovers later on in the season:

Thursday, January 31 -- Malcolm Matthews, harpsichord, in a recital of works by Froberger, Byrd, and Bach. 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 10 -- Music for Choir with Instruments featuring Choirs of Ascension and instrumentalists Cindy Hicks, harp; Michael Combs, percussion; and John Brock, organ. Work include Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein and Dorchester Canticles by Tarik O'Regan. 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, April 7 -- The Furman Chamber Choir in a concert of works by Bach, Mozart, Fauré, and Mathias. 4:00 p.m.

Church of the Ascension is located on Northshore Drive between Kingston Pike and Lyons View Pike. Information on FOMA: 865-588-0589
