Wagner's 'Ring' on PBS This Week

No new production at New York's Metropolitan Opera has inspired as much controversy as the new Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen - "The Ring of the Nibelung") of Richard Wagner, four separate operas telling one magnificent epic tale. At the center of the controversy is director Robert Lepage's "machine," a huge scenic device that simply must be seen.

PBS is airing the 4 opera cycle (Das Rheingold - "The Rhine Gold", Die Walküre - "The Valkyrie", Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung - "Twilight of the Gods") this week, Tuesday thru Friday evenings, beginning at 9 pm each night.

Tonight's preface to the series is filmmaker Susan Froemke's behind-the-scenes documentary, Wagner's Dream, examining the challenges that director Lepage and the Metropolitan Opera faced in mounting the production. At 9 pm - on ETPBS.
