Knoxville Opera This Week: 'Die Fledermaus'

Knoxville Opera officially opens its season this weekend with the pinnacle work of the Viennese operetta, Johann Strauss Jr's Die Fledermaus ("The Bat") at the Tennessee Theatre. Although one might think that the stage work is somehow linked to Halloween, that's not the case--although the audience is encouraged to wear a fancy mask if they have one. And, if past operas are any sign, there should be quite a few costumes being donned as well.

The score has many memorable moments, not the least of which is the absolutely infectious "Fledermaus Waltz." The cast includes Julia Lima and Sean Anderson (pictured above), Kevin Anderson, Donata Cuccinotta, Amanda Crider, Brian Joyce, Daniel Scofield, Leon Duquella, Kathryn Frady Marvel, and John Forrest Ferguson. This production is sung in English. KO executive director Brian Salesky will conduct the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

Performances are Friday evening at 8 pm (Oct 26) and Sunday matinee at 2:30 (Oct 28). Call for tickets at 865-524-0795.
