Hey folks, Metro Pulse intern Hannah Huber is the guest blogger for today. She was mistaken for a hired extra at this shoot on Friday:

Man v. Food host digs Knoxville

by Hannah Huber

It's not every day that one of America's favorite reality TV shows chooses one of our local restaurants to shoot a new episode. Sweet P's BBQ on Maryville Pike was lucky enough to craft up a new food challenge in the form of a barbecue burrito for Man v. Food host, Adam Richman Friday afternoon. The episode will air on the Travel Channel on Oct. 19.

Before he headed to Sweet P's to battle his nemesis, Richman was sighted at a few places around Knoxville this past week. Sources have reported seeing him dine at Ye Olde Steakhouse on Chapman Highway and Downtown Grill and Brewery on Gay Street. On its official Facebook page, the Brewery was proud to inform locals about the visit, saying "the late night menu treated him right! Buff. wrap with grilled chicken and guacamole...  (We) might have to name it after him."

Richman's final dining destination was Sweet P's, where he was presented with the El Gigante Challenge that involved eating a 5-pound burrito, 1/2 pound of mac'n cheese and a 1/2 pound of banana pudding, all in under an hour. Donning a "Hecho En Brooklyn" t-shirt, Richman sported a pair of khaki pants and a motorcycle jacket. He prepped for the grueling burrito face-off by listening to his ipod and cutting up with his crew members.

Between getting his makeup applied, then reapplied, and reading through his script, Richman enjoyed chatting with the locals in the restaurant and even featured some of them on the show. Sydney Brasher, a junior at UT was asked to participate in the filming. She had a one-on-one with Richman, telling him about the lunch she was having and how she felt about Sweet P's. Sydney had heard Richman would be at the restaurant and went with her buddies to check out the action. She was surprised to be featured in the show and, being a huge fan, was quite star struck. Although Sydney felt nervous, she said Adam was very interactive with her and made her feel comfortable. With a giggle, she added "I did feel pretty awkward eating in front of the camera."

Even though I can't tell you who won the competition, man or food, I can tell you that Richman is an enthusiastic Vols fan. Before heading out of town, he tweeted, "Game day in Knoxville! The energy here is insane! This football fan is psyched for the season ahead. Go Vols!" In his following posts, he added "To paraphrase the great Wooderson of 'Dazed and Confused,' 'I love these college girls - I get older, they stay the same age.'" Does that mean Richman is a fan of UT's college girls, as well?

P.S. from Rose K.: It may end up on the cutting room floor, but Richman did conduct at least one interview concerning Knoxville barbecue--is there a distinct one? We covered the same issue a few months back in our Barbecue Bible.

Just a few days ago, a friend was reminding me of my ability to hold a grudge, which reminded me of my grudge against cut worms. Which I wrote about last year, as regards my inability to grow yellow squash. Guess what? This year I did all the metal stuff and probably avoided cutworm, but still no yellow squash from my 5-6 plants, which are all scrawny probably due to poor watering. Oh, well, at least I can revel in my grudginess. Is curmu-grudgeon a word? Read about the squash/being a Scorpio thing here:

Gotta love a guy with an upscale Southern cuisine restaurant (the Grill at Highlands Row in Bearden) who decides to develop a line of signature moonshine cocktails. Tom Weiss told me a while back a loyal customer helped him with the specialty cocktail menu. I don't care who did it, it's just fun to have the recipe for a Moonshine Mojito, which we ran as part of our Bar Guide last issue. The recipes from S&W Grand (for the Claire-voyant) and Nama (a Green Sweet Tea concoction just right for sushi) are here, too. Have fun with this, and try not to notice that all three beverages look quite a bit alike. I assure you, the taste sensation and the appetizer they go well with are quite distinct. Oh, yeah, and if you want to read more about moonshine and a legal local source, Jesse Fox Mayshark wrote a nifty column about that early this summer. Libatious!

I'm going to enter this next year, it's pretty cool and the grand prize winner got a $250 gift certificate. Earth Fare, of which we have two in Knoxville, ran a "Take Our Tomato" contest for ingenious places their tomatoes might have made it. Here's a link to all the winning photos.

hile you're on the website, might as well sign up for the e-newsletter; if you shop there anyway, the coupons are pretty great. This week, for example, is free concord grapes, organic, with a $5 purchase.

This is what you do on Monday morning when you're a food blogger and your last entry had to do with the previous Saturday's event so you're  more than 36 hours behind already: find some leftovers! So, I'd like to draw your attention to my most recent All Foods Considered column, entitled Chard for Life. Already a loyal reader and friend, Evelyn Wallace (I'm hoping I've got that spelled correctly, Mrs. Wallace!) wants a recipe and some greens after reading this column, and that's my next task, this evening, I promise. That way I'll have something to post about tomorrow, too.

Is the cupcake's raging popularity slipping? Don't ask me that when I'm sitting in a five-mile radius from Magpie's red velvet cupcakes. And my serious answer is, "not around here." But NPR and some others are pondering the question in interesting fashion. Here's a commentary from the folks at Yahoo Shine that sums it up. To read a two-year-old piece on the local cupcake market that will still make you drool, check out "Cupcake Mania."
