Fearless Foodie:

Grow Yer Own... Veggies

The trees on my landscape that have matured into majesty are wonderful to ponder, whispery, calming. But they've become overgenerous with the shade--from a vegetable gardener's standpoint, that is, not a KUB-bill payer's. This past summer, my daughter and I, well, mostly my daughter, did experiment with some container gardening in places where the trees don't cast a shadow. A great success: breakfast radishes (more about them another day), sunflowers, basil, carrots, cucumbers, and birdhouse gourds. Not so swell: broccoli, yellow squash, green beans.

We are going to try again, and the advantage this year is we'll have some locally-focused info on  container veggie garden from a session on "The Simplicity of Growing Vegetables"
at the Birdhouse Sunday, Apr. 19 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Here's the deal, according to the invite:

"We will go over the basics of site selection, soil composition, and bed construction as we build a raised bed and plant a selection of spring crops. We will also discuss container gardening for small spaces. The cost of this workshop is $5 to cover materials. Tickets can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com, type Knoxville into the search bar."
