Sauerbrauten, I believe it was. I overheard our former intern, one Rob Baldus, talking about his grandmother's cooking, and realized that here was a kindred comestibles soul--never mind our sort of pronounced age difference, gender difference, stage of life difference... We both are fascinated with food culture, food people, food tasting, recipes, new restaurants, kitchen gadgets, and shortcuts. Over the months, we parlayed about cinnamon buns, homemade donuts (he made 'em), where to eat a super-special gourmet meal for two (he ended up at RouXbarb and was delighted), and peanut butter. I trust his judgement, except in one critical matter: he does not agree with me on the worthiness, no make that sanctity, of pickles.
Nowadays, I mostly enjoy Rob's food wit and wisdom on his blog. He's going through a vegan phase, so a lot of the talk is vegetables, which suits me fine. I was happy to see his glowing take on Knoxville Indian eatery Sitar, both because I also enjoy the vegetarian options there, and because I grew fond of the owner, Ramesh Kumar, when I interviewed him for an article about Asian Indian ex-pats in Knoxville last summer.
