I made it through an entire interview with Bill Regas, senior of the family members still involved with Regas Restaurant, without him once mentioning the place's red velvet cake--so the Metro Pulse article on the 90th anniversary of this still-keeping-pace restaurant doesn't including any Regases talking about cake, only potatoes. Bill did reference the strawberry shortcake, which he told me sells itself once one is delivered to the dining room, and Regas' ice cream, which is homemade. But he stayed mum about the red velvet specialty of the house. Until today, which is Regas' 90th anniversary, and they're serving up free red velvet for diners, along with hosting a reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. today in The Gathering Place at the restaurant, 318 N. Gay Street. Restaurant guests get 10 percent off menu items all summer long, too.
Greek immigrant brothers, George and Frank Regas, founded the restaurant on July 7, 1919.
