Fearless Foodie:

Whole Grain Cheez-Its, Corrected

Thanks alert reader the Whole Grain Queen. Turns out in the midst of my love song to Whole Grain Cheez-Its, I blithely interchanged the whole grain per serving, which is 5 grams, with the fiber, which is one gram. Here's the good and bad news about that:

Rose,

It's great that you're eating more whole grains. But don't confuse

whole grains and fiber. Whole wheat is about 12% fiber, so 5g of whole

wheat provides about 0.6g of fiber. These Cheez-Its have 5 grams of

WHOLE GRAIN, and sure enough, the nutrition facts panel shows they only

have ONE gram of fiber per serving. 5 grams of whole grain is not very

much. Products need a minimum of 8 grams of whole grain to qualify for

the Whole Grain Stamp, so these Cheez-Its don't qualify for this

industry standard. Look for the WG Stamp; it will tell you right on it

how much whole grain is in the product. The WholeGrainsCouncil.org

website lists all kinds of cracker choices with as much as 27g of whole

grain per serving! That said, every little bit of whole grain in your

diet helps your health, so 5g of whole grain is better than none!
