I'm not sure why I thought pecan trees only bore pecans (I just could not put the word "nut" next to the word "bore") every other year. But the statuesque tree at the edge of my driveway is producing anew, after a bumper-crop-that-was-never-harvested last fall. And the resident squirrels are already dropping the green ones on the car and leaving them cracked to make barefoot walking untenable. Oh, well. Live and let live? That's what I decided in this food column I wrote last year. And the green shell that startled me yesterday afternoon, pinging on the top of the car, also reminded me to ask around. Anyone know a civic group selling reasonably-priced shelled pecans? I need 'em so I can pretend like I'll be baking these cheddar-pecan thingies, kind of like the ones Pat Summit favors, but I probably never will.
