Second Harvest Food Bank was completely flooded today, ruining about $100,000 worth of food--all they had--and cancelling deliveries for at least the next four days, says executive director Elaine Streno. To get an idea of the scope of the problem: In 2010, this organization provided food for more than 12 million meals in 18 counties in East Tennessee. With six major programs and 500 Agency/Food Partners, Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee serves approximately 158,000 people each month.
"We're going to need funds," says Streno, "We have insurance, but that will take time." For now, even their website is down, but people can mail checks to 922 Delaware Ave., Knoxville, TN 37921.
And don't forget Knoxville Restaurant Week to benefit Second Harvest, which is going on right now--participating restaurants will donate $5 of every special fixed price dinner to Second Harvest, through this Friday, and maybe a week longer if Knoxville diners demand it.
