While the rest of us quietly go about our weekend, the finest judges a vintner could hope for will be assembling at the UT Conference Center to pick the best Wines of the South in the annual competition hosted by the University of Tennessee. This is the big 10 for the competition, and its first under UT Culinary Institute Wine Program Director Carol Costello. Fourteen Southern states are invited to participate, and there are numerous categories and classes. Probably the biggest news for this year is that all the entrants will be showcased at the first Tennessee Food and Wine Festival Oct. 21-22 at the Knoxville Convention Center, along with a seminar about what goes into an award-winning wine.
The judges come from many points South, and have many fine attributes, but our favorite is self-described wine-o Dennis Perkins, he of the Knoxville Magazine food writing. This morning he reminded us of a tasty dessert wine that snagged a Gold Concordance at the competition last year. Here's that info:
