Fearless Foodie:

Trader Joe's Open Today!

Knoxville's got its own Trader Joe's food store as of this morning, right there near the Toys R Us at 8001 Kingston Pike. I'm a big, big fan of their foods and sheer browsability, owing to spending several lazy Saturday afternoons at the Kettering, Ohio location earlier this year on multiple visits to relatives in that area. I don't have as much experience with their frozen foods, owing to transportation issues, though we did find a fabulous $5 pack of four mini frozen tira misu type things there once. And we will certainly miss their wine sales at the Tennessee location. But here are five items that are glorious from there, and very well priced. (I'm only putting the price if I remember it specifically; I'm waiting for the crowds to thin out before venturing out there later today...):

1. Dried mangos.
2. Whole roasted almonds.
3. Sesame sticks, a one-pound bag for like $4
4. Organic, whole milk plain yogurt.
5. Shallots, two for 99 cents

The produce is wonderful, but not reliable, as any store employee will tell you while making new suggestions for your evening meal plans, but I have found lovely mini zucchini, blood oranges, and heirloom mini-tomatoes there at different times.  I'll have some more updates as the week wears on, but trust me, it's a fun place and I for one expect my weeknight eating habits to drastically improve now that they're here, particularly with that ready-to-roll whole wheat pizza dough sitting on the shelves....
