Fearless Foodie:

Gavino's Opens In Bearden!

Yeah, yeah, we all thought Gavin Loyer would move out of Knoxville once he sold his Gay Street spot, Dazzo's, these many months back. He says his house wouldn't sell... and that's why he's behind the counter in an apron once more, now at the helm of Gavino's Pizzeria and Restaurant at 5211 Kingston Pike (kind of close to Toddy's and on the same side of the street.) Mind you, we are not complaining. His new place features New York Italian American pizza as only he (and his grandmother) can make it, and lots of homemade pastas and rolls.

Here's what's got me pleased: you can pretend you're in Manhattan and slide by day or night to order your slice at the counter. Yep, day or night, starting at $2.75 for an unadorned slice. Or you can order from the table, take a whole pie, etc. And he's got a full bar, pretty rare at a slice or sitdown place, and it's pretty. Here are a few shots I snapped last week, on his 8th day of business. That first is Gavin himself, all ready to introduce more folks to New York pizza with the appropriate attitude. Eat, eat!
