Cakes for a cause return to Neyland Stadium on Saturday, February 22

(Knoxville, TN)  What do Dolly Parton, butter cream, and diapers have in common? The Great Cake Bake!  East Tennessee's fanciest cake decorating competition takes place this Saturday, February 22  from 12 - 5 p.m. in the Tennessee Terrace at UT's Neyland Stadium. This year's competition will feature more than 170 cakes. Tickets are $10, and children under 12 will be admitted for free. All proceeds benefit Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Knox County, which sends books in the mail every month to children under five, free of charge. Free and convenient parking is available in Lot 9 next to Gate 19 in Neyland Stadium.

New this year is the Diaper Cake Competition. Diaper Cakes have become a popular baby shower gift in recent years. Made of diapers, ribbons, and baby accessories, the diaper cakes can be very elaborate and artistic and will often retail for over $150.

In addition to showcasing the region's top bakers and cake decorators, attendees can taste cake samples from showcase bakers, enjoy milk shots from Cruze Dairy Farms, decorate their own cupcakes, vote on their favorite cakes, shop in the bake sale, and create crafts in the Children's Area. Most competition cakes, including the Diaper Cakes, are for sale.

It's all for a very good cause. "The Imagination Library program provides an important building block for Knox County's children," Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett said.  "By sending books in the mail every month, we are helping families put a priority on learning to read. Programs like the Imagination Library foster children's natural curiosity and encourage our young people to read, and the Great Cake Bake is a good way to support those efforts."

Cakes have been entered in the following divisions:  Junior (under 18), Beginner, Intermediate, and Professional; and  in one of three categories: All Occasion Cakes, Wedding Cakes, and a single brilliantly decorated cupcake or cake pop. The decorated cakes will be separated into different groups: buttercream frosting only and fondant/gum paste/mixed sugar art. Diaper Cakes are the newest division.

Winners in each category and division will receive a trophy and bragging rights for an entire year. The public will vote on their favorite cake to find a People's Choice Winner.
