January 2009 Archives

Big metal news from Charlie Jennings at AC Entertainment yesterday:

Friends,
I am excited to let you know about a very special event at Knoxville's fabulous Bijou Theatre on the evening of Friday, May 22, 2009.
Swedish prog-rock gods
OPETH
w/ special guest Enslaved
As many of you know, I find Opeth to be one of the great bands of our time and consider their record "Ghost Reveries" the best I have ever heard.
If you are unfamiliar with Opeth, but are an avid music fan, this is a must-see show for you!  Opeth, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, blend the blues and jazz of progressive rock bands such as Pink Floyd and King Crimson with classic Scandanavian death metal.
If you already know and love Opeth, you'll be especially excited to see Opeth's breath-taking live show and hear their musical perfection in Knoxville's historic Bijou Theatre, with it's intimate size and incredible acoustics.
Also on the bill is Norway's Enslaved, whose recent release "Vertebrae" has received rave reviews in recent press.
Counting down Metro Pulse's (un)official (and probably totally unreliable but still way fun to put together) list of The Best Knoxville Bands Ever over on Knox Blab.
Superdrag has announced dates for its tour in support of the upcoming Industry Giants. The kickoff will be at Barley's Taproom on Friday, March 13, with ex-Superdrag/V-Roys guitarist Mic Harrison and the High Score opening.
just wait till the reunited Phish comes to Knoxville the day before Bonnaroo starts.
The final schedule for the Big Ears Festival has been released. As expected, it's a monster--three performances by Christian Fennesz (solo, with Tony Buck of The Necks and guitarist David Daniell, and with Mark Linkous and Scott Minor of Sparklehorse), a Deep Listening workshop with Pauline Oliveros, and a hands-on Moog demonstration that lasts all weekend, plus all the headliners and performances and events at The Square Room, Catalyst (the former Blue Cats space in the Old City), Knoxville Museum of Art, Pilot Light, the Woodruff Building on Gay Street, Old City Java, and the gallery space at 128 Gay St.
The biggest of them all: the Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll 2008.

Album winner is TV on the Radio's Dear Science, singles winner is M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes."
The annual Metro Pulse music issue is due out on Jan. 29 and will feature The Best Knoxville Band Ever
"How does a nice, Christian girl become a whore, a witch, and a manslayer?" asks The Latter Days.

"The answer is she doesn't; someone else does. Are you confused yet? Well, just keep reading."
