Microsoft Gives Itself a Stupid Idea for Christmas

As opposed to every other year, right?
Oh, this is rich.  (You know, if you're a total geekwad like me.)

Correct me if I'm wrong here: Microsoft wants to introduce a payment model to the market which subsidizes at least part of the up-front cost of a PC in favor of a "scalable performance" system wherein the end-user is charged a fee based on how much of the machine's capabilities he wants to utilize.

I mean, seriously.  What?  The whole crux of this idea revolves around the concept that buying a PC is a one-time purchase of a product which cannot be altered or upgraded* by its owner after its purchase, which is only true if you're buying a Mac.  And it's like 1993.

The biggest secret in PC manufacturing is that hardware is about as complicated as your average LEGO set anymore.  Even if you're strapped for cash, there isn't anything that anyone needs to do with a PC which can't be covered by a couple of hundred bucks' worth of hardware and an hour or so of assembly time.

There is really no reason whatsoever to bother with this.  If this idea hits retail in a couple of years, run away from it as fast as you can.
