This morning we ran a story about University of Tennessee Athletic
Director Mike Hamilton and the possibility that his job security
depends on new football coach Lane Kiffin's performance this fall.
Hamilton's life just got a lot more complicated than that--reports out of Memphis suggest that UT basketball coach Bruce Pearl has been contacted by the University of Memphis about its head coaching vacancy.
Memphis' John Calipari announced Tuesday that he's taking the coaching job at Kentucky.
The News Sentinel reported yesterday that Hamilton says Memphis officials haven't asked for permission to speak to Pearl. But remember that Hamilton also denied that Lane Kiffin had been offered the football job just a few days before Kiffin's hiring was announced. When it comes to coaching searches, you can't believe anything until an official announcement. The latest is that Hamilton and Pearl will discuss the terms of Pearl's contract today.
There are a lot of reasons the Memphis job would be attractive--the high-quality high school basketball there; a rumored offer of a $21 million, seven-year contract (depending on what Alabama offers new hire Anthony Grant and what Georgia offers its next head coach, Pearl could end up making less than four other coaches in the SEC); and a Conference USA schedule instead of a now much-tougher SEC East schedule, with Calipari at Kentucky.
