One of our recurring local comic strips, The Weekly Cheese, often causes a bit of consternation among discerning readers: The humor can be rather bizarre and the penmanship isn't always perfectly clean. But what you may not know is that the cartoonist isn't just an adult hipster attempting to emulate a child-like style--the artist really is a bona fide kid, 13-year-old Bearden Middle School student Jack Evans.
And we're pleased to note that Jack will be heading to Nashville this Friday to compete in the Tennessee state championships of the National Geographic Bee. Jack and 100 other 4th-8th-grade geniuses will be battling it out to represent Tennessee in the nationals (May 19-20) in Washington D.C. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society--and, more importantly, a trip to the Galapagos Islands with Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. (Really? Yes!)
Wouldn't you like to see comics of Alex Trebek in the Galapagos? I know I would...
