Not for now, anyway. Rep. David Shephard (D-Dickson), who introduced a bill that would allow grocery stores--not just liquor stores--to sell wine, asked the house subcommittee to put off considering his measure Wednesday Apr. 15. Despite lots of strong support from lawmakers and claims that it would add to the state coffers, the bill stirred strong sentiment among liquor and wine retailers and churches. Shephard, or someone else, may introduce the bill or one like it next session. But the issues for local wine sellers summed up in last month's article on "Wine Debate Spills Over" probably won't change much.
