The Daily Pulse:

At Long Last, Soccer Taco

Last April, you may recall, we here at the MP national headquarters were quite excited by the prospect of Bearden's Soccer Taco opening a downtown location. Months passed and our anxiousness grew, though we received assurances from owners Marilyn Parham and Nellie Kirtley that construction delays hadn't dissuaded them from bringing affordable tacos to Market Square.

Then, two weeks ago, the day finally arrived: The doors opened, the lights went on... and we couldn't get a frickin' table. In a more just world, we'd have plenty of time to wait in line, but in the fast-paced world of weekly journalism, it's just not possible.

As the days passed, the lines only grew longer, earlier. We have eye-witness accounts of clusters of people standing around Market Square at noon, clutching beepers. Who would've thought that could ever happen in our lifetime?

So, after a few weeks of misery, Travis and I went at 11:08 a.m. That's right: We went to eat burritos in the morning because that's what it took to get in the door without waiting.

At $4.95 each, these lunch specials are very good -- the ingredients are fresh, the spicing is tasty (if mild), and they're fast. The overall menu looks to be the same as the Bearden location's, which is a great thing (though I probably won't be having cabeza sopes anytime soon). Inside, the 11 flat-screen TVs manage to bring a festive air to the proceedings rather than overshadowing the food, and the room itself is small but comfy.

Soccer Taco has lived up to our anticipation. Now, if we could just eat there at a reasonable hour...
