The newly formed Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present--ASAP, an inter-disciplinary academic society--begins its first international conference today, in Knoxville. Keynote speaker Ngugi wa Thiong'o, who spent time in Kenyan prisons following the publication of his critical novel "Petals of Blood," will read Saturday evening at the Baker Center.
