The bridge was closed because of icy conditions during Thursday's winter storm and had remained closed over the weekend. The City of Knoxville decided not to salt the bridge because it is a steel structure that can be damaged by the salt.
City Public Service Department crews cleared the remaining ice from the bridge Monday and put sand down before reopening it to traffic.
