Yesterday, radio journalist Ann Lloyd announced she was no longer employed by WUOT. While some details about what prompted the situation are still lacking, Lloyd today made it clear she had been dismissed, not downsized. She weighed in with these words in a Facebook letter to reporter Rose Kennedy, which arrived an hour or so after the Facebook group Boycott WUOT 91.9 FM formed on her behalf:
"I never expected to be the subject of a media campaign... I'm sorry to leave WUOT. It is a wonderful radio station with a tremendously talented staff. I harbor no ill will to anyone there. I believe politics and economics each played a part in the decision to let me go. I am contesting the action of UT and hope for a good outcome."
Lloyd also added a few more quotes that were, by her own reckoning, much less politically correct: "Oh sure, get rid of the crazy cripple. You'll save a lot of money that way. (I have major health issues and am scheduled for knee replacement surgery next week). Being ATC host was my dream job."
WUOT staff referred Metro Pulse to the University of Tennessee for official comment. According to Karen Collins, UT's Director, Media + Internal Relations, "This is a personnel matter, not anything the university will be commenting on."
