For the past few days, Facebook pages and the Knoxblab discussion forum have been alerting friends of Robert Loest of terrible news: That he experienced a severe heart attack on Friday and that recovery appears unlikely. He is currently hospitalized and off life-support.
Details of what happened will come at a more appropriate time. For now, it's important to note that Knoxville will be missing one of its most active citizens, as well as one of its great characters. Loest--a financial guru whose financial investment strategies were once described by The New York Times as "radically esoteric"--also became known as a champion of urban living, always ready and willing to discuss his ideas for revitalizing downtown Knoxville.
We'll be posting more thoughts in the days ahead. In the meantime, you can read more about Robert on this Knoxblab thread.
UPDATE 2/17: According to close friend Steve Dupree, Robert Loest died this morning. Former MP editor and incoming staffer Jesse Fox Mayshark eulogizes him in "Remembering Robert Loest."
