The 100 Block of South Gay Street is open again. Sort of. (Won't actually be open to traffic for two weeks, but it looks nice.)

A small scrum of Knoxville dignitaries, reporters, and local residents and business owners turned out to hear Mayor Bill Haslam (left) praise the work itself and the patience of those who have had to live with it right outside their doorways.

Residents who in recent weeks have had the pleasure of being awakened at 3 a.m. by a cement mixer will no doubt rest easier. And shop owners and restaurateurs whose patrons have been compelled for months to navigate an ever-shifting landscape of heavy equipment, gravel, mud, improvised ramps and the occasional complete disappearance of sidewalks are undoubtedly happy as well.
