An Early Voting Record

Early voting for the Aug. 5 election ended today. Via the Facebook page of Greg Mackay, Knox County election administrator:

‎34,977 voted early. The largest turnout for an August election in the history of Knox County.

Of course, we won't know if that translates into an actual record turnout overall until election day. Early-vote totals have been rising in each election in recent years as more people get accustomed to the idea. But it can't hurt to have a hometown boy on the gubernatorial ticket. It's clear the Republican primary is the driving motivation for Knox County voters; as of Thursday afternoon, Republican primary voters were outnumbering Democrats by a nearly 13-to-1 margin. Among other things, that means that in the absence of Democratic primary contests, a lot of otherwise Democratic-leaning voters are crossing over, presumably to give a push to Mayor Bill Haslam. Not that Haslam probably wants Zach Wamp to know that...
