Well, not really. It's more of a, "It's not you, it's us" type of thing. But even after spending weeks trying desperately to prepare Knox County parents for the shock of seeing their precious moppets' test scores drop under new, tougher TCAP standards, school officials are apparently still sufficiently worried about mass freak-out to schedule a whole public meeting about it. Hence, this afternoon's announcement of a forum at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, the 28th, at West High School. Where, presumably, parents (and anyone else) can come to freak out in person.

Community Forum planned to discuss higher standards, state assessments
On Tuesday, Sept. 21 the Knox County Schools will release the results of the state assessments that children took last spring (TCAP or End of Course). Last year was the first year that students were subject to Tennessee's new and more rigorous academic standards. Because the State of Tennessee has significantly raised the academic bar, scores on the state tests are likely to be lower than what parents may be used to seeing. Many students who are accustomed to scoring in the proficient and advanced ranges may now see scores that are identified as "basic" or even "below basic."
Dr. Jim McIntyre, Superintendent of the Knox County Schools, will host a community forum on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at West High School to discuss these new, higher standards and address any concerns that parents or the community may have.
