via WhitesCreek at RoaneViews, we learn that Gov. Phil Bredesen has filed a petition with the feds asking the Department of the Interior to find ridgelines on the Northern Cumberland Plateau "unsuitable for surface mining."
If granted, the petition would protect the top 600 feet of Cumberland ridges, effectively blocking any efforts to blast them away in search of coal seams. If this is a sign of the kinds of lame-duck acts we can expect from Bredesen on his way out of office, it's a welcome one.
