This week's cover story by Rose Kennedy profiled same-sex couples in Knoxville and the issues they face here. Yesterday also just happened to be National Coming Out Day, which inspired a gathering on the UT campus; Metro Pulse intern Hannah Huber files this report:
LBGT History Month couldn't have come at a better time than this October in light of the recent suicide by Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi. To encourage students to be more comfortable with their sexuality, the University of Tennessee's LGBT Commission sponsored an event at the UT Humanities Amphitheater yesterday afternoon.
In honor of National Coming Out Day, students and faculty members alike gathered for a little over an hour to hand out T-shirts and informational pamphlets. Music blared throughout the Pedestrian Walkway and students, some sporting a rainbow flag and others their "Coming Out Day" T-shirts, showed a lot of enthusiasm for the event and even boogied down to songs like the "Cupid Shuffle."
Amberly Kelley, a senior majoring in speech pathology was very happy to see an event on campus that supports UT's LGBT community. "I think the LGBT community is not really noticed on campus so this event is a great way to bring awareness," Kelley says. "It shows people that they are not alone and there is a presence of not only those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender but also allies to the LGBT community."
