Local attorney and man about town Charlie Thomas (who is, for the record, an old friend of many of us here at Metro Pulse) is the latest resident of the 5th District to apply to complete the rest of Vice Mayor Becker's City Council term. Becker is resigning this month to join his family in Virginia, and Council will hold a special meeting next Thursday, Jan. 20, to appoint an interim representative. Any 5th District resident 21 or older can apply for the post by filling out a short form in the City Council office, room 460 of the City County Building. The deadline for applications is next Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Thomas ran and lost a competitive race in 2003 for an at-large Council seat. In recent years, he has been dividing his time between Knoxville and Guatemala, but in the past year has spent most of his time in Knoxville. He has owned a house in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of North Knoxville for 19 years. In filling vacated seats, Council often gives preference to people who say they would not plan to run for re-election. Thomas says that is his intent, merely to finish out the final year of Becker's term. "I feel like I have the experience," he says. "I've been really active in the community."
Others who have expressed interest in the seat include Renée Hoyos, executive director of the Tennessee Clean Water Network, and Bill Rolen.
