Six Knoxvillians submitted applications before Tuesday's deadline to serve out the remainder of Vice Mayor Bob Becker's City Council term. Becker represents Council's 5th District, which covers most of North Knoxville as well as the neighborhoods between Clinton Highway and Broadway north of 640. Becker resigned to join the rest of his family in Virginia. His term expires at the end of the year. Council will appoint a replacement representative at a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Main Assembly Room of the City County Building.
Applicants for the post need only be 21 or older and live in the 5th District. The six who have put in their names are a mix of old faces and newer ones:
Joe Ray Burchfield Sr., 73, was briefly a state representative in 1989-90. He retired as president of Alco Freight Line in 2005.
Beth Eason, 47, owns a Knoxville architecture firm, served on energy policy task forces for both Gov. Phil Bredesen and Mayor Bill Haslam, and is a board member of Knox Heritage.
Renée Hoyos, 46, is executive director of the Tennessee Clean Water Network and worked on environmental issues for the California Resources Agency under Gov. Gray Davis.
Bill Rolen, 73, ran rental car agencies in Knoxville for 26 years before retiring in 2006.
Charles Thomas, 56, a local attorney who in recent years has divided his time between Knoxville and Guatemala. He made an unsuccessful bid for an at-large Council seat in 2003.
Chuck Williams, 56, is a Navy veteran who works at the city's Impound Lot. He ran for state Senate as an independent last year, finishing a distant third to Stacey Campfield and Randy Walker.
