Photographer Eric Gebhart captured the scene at an amazing show by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the Bijou Theatre last night. Check out the full gallery on our facebook page.
Jones was electric from start to finish. This was no mere tribute act to old-school R&B of the Stax style--this was the real deal. The Dap-Kings are a hot, tight band with a crack horn section, and Jones was absolutely consumed by the music, projecting her energy to every seat in the house. She's a truly great performer, reveling in a showmanship that nearly doesn't exist anymore. The high point was an epic interlude wherein she followed her ancestors' path to America via African dance, kicking off her shoes and demonstrating each generation's moves. The audience screamed and danced the entire night, joining her onstage when beckoned. It was a delightful spectacle.
